Emerging from the Leeds College and Guildhall jazz programmes in 1990, Mike Williams enjoyed over a dozen years working on the London scene, highlights including extended stints with the various bands of Simon Purcell, Ricardo Dos Santos, Kjell Berglund and Hans Koller to name a few amongst many in addition to leading his own bands.
He was invited to be part of the Birmingham Conservatoire Jazz programme when it was created in 1999, eventually moving to Birmingham in 2003.
He is currently a member of Richard Iles’ chamber ensemble Microscopic and his own quartet includes Phil Robson, Percy Pursglove and James Maddren.
Drawing upon, and reconciling influences from the ‘Elders’ of the Musical and ‘Sufi’ lineages that are integral to Mike Williams, this set of Jazzlines commissioned pieces for octet represents a celebration of living and working in Birmingham. The music invites you to travel within a strong jazz aesthetic into the realm of the contemplative, ‘a place to engage and receive’.
The ‘SAMA’ Suite was premiered as part of the Jazzlines series at the CBSO Centre, Birmingham on 9th January 2015 by Percy Pursglove trumpet, Jeremy Price trombone, Alex Merrit tenor saxophone, Mike Williams alto saxophone, Chris Maddock baritone saxophone, Gareth Fowler guitar, James Banner bass and Troy Miller drums.
It was commissioned by Jazzlines at Town Hall Symphony Hall, Birmingham
