John Casken studied at the University of Birmingham and the Academy of Music in Warsaw. From 1992-2008 he was Professor of Music at The University of Manchester.
He has been awarded the First Britten Prize for Composition, a Gramophone Award, Prince Pierre de Monaco Prize for Musical Composition and his work The Dream of The Rood received the British Composer Award in the Vocal category in 2009.
Apollinaire’s Bird was written at the invitation of the Hallé for their Prinicipal Oboist Stéphane Rancourt for its premiere at the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester, on 10 April 2014, conducted by Sir Mark Elder.
